NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A deliveryman is dead and a woman injured after a car crashed into a restaurant's outdoor dining structure in Queens on Thursday evening.
The crash happened around 7:45 p.m. on the corner of 35th Street and Ditmars Boulevard in Astoria.
Police said a 2013 Mercedes-Benz C-300 struck a 37-year-old man operating a 2019 Yamaha Chappy before dragging the man, crashing into two parked vehicles and plowing into the outdoor dining area of the Peruvian restaurant, Rosatoro.
The deliveryman on the scooter, identified as Xing Lin of Queens, was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.
A 32-year-old woman inside the restaurant who was struck by debris suffered injuries to both of her legs. She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition.
Police said the driver of the Mercedes, a 60-year-old woman, was speeding and swerved around an Uber into a bike lane before striking the scooter. She remained at the scene and was also taken to an area hospital.
Police are still investigating the crash. No arrests had been reported as of Friday morning.
Photos and videos posted to Twitter showed extensive damage to the dining area with debris strewn about the street.
The scene of the crash is a tight corner with multiple outdoor dining sheds. Marina Miro was not surprised by the crash.
“It would have happened at some point of time. I mean, it’s right here on this street where cars drive, they park here. It’s inevitable,” Miro said.
