YONKERS (WCBS 880) – Several teens were arrested after a 6-year-old boy was shot and wounded in Yonkers on Thursday evening, police said.

The boy was shot in the shoulder outside a home on Ash Street shortly after 6 p.m., according to police.

The child was hospitalized and is expected to survive, police said.

Three teenage juveniles were arrested at different locations following foot pursuits, according to Police Commissioner John Mueller, who said two handguns were recovered.

Police believe the boy was not the intended target of the shooting.

“As a parent, it’s despicable. It’s disgusting. It’s horrible. You know, this is what we’re up against right now,” Mueller said.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano addressed gun violence, saying, “people that live here need to know that they can walk out in front of their house and feel safe.”

“It never should have happened, and that is the frustrating part, because it happens all too often,” Spano said.
