NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A 4-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being struck by a dirt bike in a Queens park on Sunday.

The boy was with his parents at the Meadow Lake boathouse parking lot at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park off the Van Wyck Expressway when he was struck just before 6 p.m.

The driver left the scene.

Police have not released a description of the driver, but said they are looking for a black and gold dirt bike.

The child is hospitalized in critical condition with severe head trauma.

One woman told WCBS-TV that dirt bikes often speed through the park.

"It was bound to happen, I see it every day and I'm just like hoping that no one gets hurt, but people are not being responsible," the woman said.

"Obviously we're not talking about decent human beings here," said one man who was on his morning run. "This park happens to be very busy on Sundays. A lot of soccer, barbecues, and I never heard of anything happening here in the past, but I hope they find the guy."

Black tire marks made by the dirt bikes doing wheelies could be seen throughout the parking lot Monday morning.

The NYPD recently announced a summer-long crackdown on illegal dirt bike riders who speed through neighborhoods in packs.

Last week, Bronx City Councilman Mark Gjonaj introduced legislation increasing the fines from $500 to $700 for those using dirt bikes or ATVs in the city.
