NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- At least 50 people were arrested in Manhattan on Wednesday night after post-election protesters set piles of trash on fire and clashed with officers, police said.
The NYPD said agitators “attempted to hijack a peaceful protest” in which hundreds of marchers demanded the counting of every presidential election vote.
The protest in Midtown ended peacefully but another one began south at Washington Square Park.
Some demonstrators shouted anti-police expletives as they moved towards Seventh Avenue, throwing bottles at officers and lighting garbage on fire, police said.
Some of the people who were arrested threw eggs at officers and at least one person broke a store window, police told the Associated Press.
The NYPD said officers recovered a knife, a stun gun, spray paint and M80 firecrackers.
One woman was captured on video cursing at and then spitting in an officer’s face.
“Actions like this will not be tolerated. Agitators who commit these acts will be arrested,” the NYPD tweeted in reaction to the video.
Video also shows police in riot gear throwing protesters to the ground and surrounding others.
No police were injured and there was no significant damage to businesses, many of them still boarded up in anticipation of post-election protests.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said violence will not be tolerated.
"We obviously cannot allow violence, let's be clear, attacks on people, setting fires, attacks on officers, attacks on property, we just can't allow that and we won't," de Blasio said. "But at the same time the goal is always to deescalate and that's what is important to ensure in everything we do."
De Blasio said anyone who takes part in violence will face real consequences.
