EAST HAMPTON (1010 WINS) -- This Saturday, some of New York's pre-eminent media figures will step up to the plate for the 75th anniversary of the East Hampton Artists & Writers Annual Softball Game, which will benefit charities centered in Long Island's East End.
The game will take place at Rennick Park, which has been newly renovated for the occasion.
This year, the teams will field longtime NY Daily News sports columnist Mike Lupica, Footloose star Lori Singer, CBS weatherman Lonnie Quinn, and many more. In addition to the softball match, the festivities will include face-painting, special anniversary t-shirts, and raffles.
1010 WINS reporter Juliet Papa will work the broadcast booth alongside scorekeeper Josh Brandman. 1010 WINS is an official sponsor of the game.
According to the softball game's website, all proceeds will go toward four charities in and around East Hampton:
• The Phoenix House, a halfway house for young men struggling with substance abuse;
• The Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center
• The Retreat, a domestic violence hotline
• East End Hospice
75 years ago, the first East Hampton softball game featured famed New York-based artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Writers like Irwin Shaw and James Jones joined the fray in the 1960s-70s, and politicians, reporters, and actors have since been included in the East End festivities.
Batting practice begins at 12 noon on Saturday, with the first pitch being thrown at 2 p.m. The East Hampton Artists & Writers Charity Softball Game foundation recommends a $10 donation at the door; money can also be pledged directly on their website.
