NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- More money is on its way to help out New York City Health Department and its hospitals as a wave of omicron continues to hit.

Mayor Eric Adams visited Elmhurst Hospital Wednesday to announce $111 million in “immediate support” for hospitals in the city system and their workers.

Much of that money is coming from FEMA, while another $27 million is on the way via a Goldman Sachs loan for safety-net hospitals. Those are hospitals outside the NYC Health + Hospitals network.

"We know about these staffing issues that we are facing. Finding the dollars and the money to ensure that we maintain proper staffing in our hospitals. This is crucial,” said Adams. “Salaries, protective equipment, testing and vaccine administration."

Adams also said his administration will expand staffing and support at the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The state reported over 42,000 COVID-19 cases in New York City Wednesday. The city has the state’s highest case count per 100,000 people — over 468.

But while cases and hospitalizations are still going up, city Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi said there is a glimmer of hope.

"In the last few days, what we're seeing is that the steepness of the curve is not quite as much,” he said, though with the caveat that those numbers could be related to testing patterns around the holidays.
