NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The suspect in the deadly shooting of a 10-year-old boy in Queens was taken into police custody on Tuesday evening, according to police.
Authorities say 29-year-old Jovan Young, of Far Rockaway, was arrested Tuesday in connection to the fatal shooting of 10-year-old Justin Wallace on Beach 45th Street in Edgemere on Saturday night.
Wallace was shot in the torso while standing in the doorway of his aunt’s house around 9:30 p.m. when a suspect opened fire at close range from the porch of the home. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Family members say he would have turned 11-years-old on Tuesday.
The boy’s 29-year-old uncle was also shot in the shoulder. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The violence is believed to be the result of a yearslong battle with a neighbor over a shared driveway.
Young was charged with murder, attempted murder, assault and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.
In an interview Wednesday morning, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea told NY1, "We're just glad for the family that we can close that chapter of it."
"The sad thing is it's never going to bring that young boy back and that's the real tragedy here," Shea said.
