CARMEL, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Authorities are trying to find the person responsible for abandoning a beagle on the side of a road in Putnam County last week.

The Putnam County SPCA said a delivery driver saw someone push the dog out of an older model black Jeep Wrangler onto the side of Route 301 in Carmel around 1 p.m. last Tuesday.

The dog then chased after the Jeep as it sped away from the scene.

The delivery driver managed to catch the beagle and brought her to the Putnam Humane shelter.

“Abandonment of any animal is a crime in New York State,” said SPCA Chief Ken Ross. “Anyone who does this, especially at this time of year, is heartless.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Putnam County SPCA Human Law Enforcement Division at 845-520-6915.
