NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – “Bridgegate” is back in the headlines as the race for Bergen County clerk heats up.

Bergen County Clerk John Hogan stood Friday at the base of the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee to announce his reelection campaign.

It wasn’t at all a coincidence that it was the same place where his opponent, Bridget Kelly, infamously said some eight years ago that it was “time for some traffic problems.”

“She knew what she was doing. She was part of it, and she should've known better,” Hogan said.

Hogan is going up against Kelly, the former aide to ex-Gov. Chris Christie who was convicted of purposefully jamming up traffic in Fort Lee as political payback in 2013.

Her conviction was later overturned by the Supreme Court. Hogan said he believed in second chances but didn’t see a reason to let her off the hook.

“It was embarrassing that anyone in elected office or appointed office would carry out these evil deeds,” Hogan said.

In a response, Kelly said Hogan was trying to distract from his own record by seizing on “juvenile drama.”

“John Hogan, the scion of a local ‘political dynasty,’ never had to work a day in his adult life,” Kelly said. “Today, he seized on juvenile drama to distract from his own record of misappropriation of taxpayer dollars on promotional materials and patronage for his political friends.”
