Authorities said the black and white feline, who has been named Highway, was found on Jan. 24 in a cat carrier at a rest stop on I-95.

New Canaan Animal Control and State Police were able to safely rescue Highway and transport the cat to a local veterinarian to be examined.

The veterinarian determined that Highway had suffered two broken legs and had trauma to a right eye. It remains unclear how the cat was injured, but officials suspect abuse.

New Canaan Animal Control reached out to Norwalk-based PAWS to help rehabilitate Highway, and the organization “did not hesitate to help.”

“Despite the suspected abuse ‘Highway’ remains a sweet and trusting animal,” said New Canaan Police officials in a statement.

Those interested in helping with Highway's surgeries and rehabilitation can contact PAWS in Norwalk at 203-750-9572 for more information.
