NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo will leave office with a 38% approval rating, according to a new poll released Wednesday.
A new Marist Poll showed Cuomo receiving some of the lowest marks in his tenure as governor of New York. His approval rating was also a sharp drop from the 49% score he received in February and the 66% score he was given in July 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The poll found that only 31% of New York registered voters feel Cuomo is doing an excellent (11%) or good (20%) job in office, falling 1 point below the lowest rating his father, Gov. Mario Cuomo, ever received.
According to the poll, however, 51% of registered Democrats in the state still approve of the job Cuomo is doing as governor. Meanwhile, 16% of all registered voters in the state gave Cuomo a seal of approval.
The embattled governor has the highest approval rating in New York City with 44%. In all other regions, however, the rating falls below 40%.
“New Yorkers’ impressions of the governor have plummeted.
Cuomo’s favorable rating (28%) among New York registered voters is his lowest since taking office. In February, Cuomo’s favorability rating stood at 50% which was his previous lowest point,” Marist Poll wrote in its report.
Additionally, the poll asked voters to rate incoming Gov.
Kathy Hochul and found that many voters do not know enough about her to properly rate.
A total of 64% of New Yorkers – including 62% of registered voters – said they have never heard of her or are unsure how to rate her.
Meanwhile, 23% of those surveyed had a favorable opinion of the incoming governor.
She is best known in regions across Upstate New York, where 31% of residents hold a positive opinion on her.
“This is the end of the Cuomo era in New York State,” said Dr. Lee Miringoff, director of Marist Poll. “Governor Hochul assumed office with an opportunity to make her mark on state government. Depending on how she fares, she may face Democratic primary challengers in 2022, in addition to the Republicans who need to recalculate their chances given the exit of Cuomo from the New York stage.”
