NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Famed New York City restauranteur Danny Meyer said Thursday that all staff and dine-in guests at his restaurants will be required to be vaccinated.
Meyer, who also chairs the city Economic Development Corporation, told CNBC that he’s “following the lead of both city, state and federal government.”
“We’re going to do this ourselves in our restaurants in New York City and in Washington, D.C.—our full-service restaurants—to require that all staff members be vaccinated, and also to require that guests who want to dine indoors in our restaurants show proof that they’ve been vaccinated,” Meyer said.
The vaccine requirement will take effect on Sept. 7, according to a message on the website of Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group.
“Please bring along either your physical Covid-19 vaccine card, your New York State Excelsior Pass, your relevant state-provided vaccine pass, or a photo of your vaccination card to share upon arrival,” the message reads.
The Union Square Hospitality Group operates some of New York’s most well-known restaurants, including Gramercy Tavern, Blue Smoke and The Modern.
“We feel like we’ve got an amazing responsibility to keep our staff members and our guests safe, and that’s what we’re going to do,” Meyer said during the CNBC interview.
Meyer, who also founded Shake Shack, told CNBC that the popular city burger chain "will make the appropriate decision for them at the appropriate time."
Dave Chokshi, the city's health commissioner, applauded Meyer's announcement on Twitter.
