Final preparations underway at Central Park for Saturday's 'homecoming' concert

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Final preparations are underway in Central Park for the big "We Love NYC - The Homecoming Concert" on Saturday.

An estimated 60,000 people are expected to attended the event on the Great Lawn, the geographic center of the park.

"It feels like it belongs here," said Zack Holm, turf care manager of the Central Park Conservancy. "To kind of see it come to life and to know that this whole week has been a celebration of New York City coming back and to know it's going to be a night that a lot of people are going to remember for a long time is really exciting and motivating. It's a really good feeling."

The conservancy takes care of all 843-acres of Central Park. Their hard work over the 51 other weeks of the year all come down to this week, when the Great Lawn is being prepared for the big show.

After months of making sure that all details, even down to the soil of the Great Lawn are just right, Holm said the field is ready to welcome the tens of thousands of fans.

"We already had kind of a load in on the lawn where some heavy equipment drove out, we put down some protective flooring," Holm said.

The finishing touches are already underway. Holm notes part of it is trash management, restoring or renovating the lawn and ensuring turf guarantee.

"Having a concert to celebrate New York City's comeback, having the backdrop of the skyline with Central Park's trees it's truly a magical experience," said Arica VanBoxtel, director of communications for the nonprofit.

The show will feature performances by Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Paul Simon, Jennifer Hudson, Andrea Bocelli and LL Cool J.

All concertgoers over 12 years old will need to show proof of vaccination to attend.
