NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A fire was seen raging in the middle of a Harlem street Friday afternoon as Con Edison was responding to a gas leak.

The incident happened near the intersection of West 114th Street and Seventh Avenue, according to the FDNY.

Fire officials say the fire, which broke out at around 1:30 p.m., reached two-alarms “due to a necessity for resources to check surrounding properties.”

“A gas crew was in the area investigating a suspected gas leak,” a spokesman for Con Edison told WCBS 880. “Ignition took place in an excavation that was over a low-pressure gas main.”

The utility was already at the scene at the time of the fire and was able to shut off the gas line.

According to Twitter users, buildings surrounding the fire were evacuated briefly as a precaution.

"This was an extended operation as Firefighters stretched precautionary hose lines and searched neighboring properties to ensure no fire extension and/or carbon monoxide readings in the dwellings," an FDNY spokesperson told WCBS 880.

Posts on social media show the fire was out at around 5:30 p.m.

FDNY units remained on the scene to assist Con Edison. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
