NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – The city’s ranked-choice voting primary is already seeing a lot of firsts—like two top mayoral candidates campaigning together.

Andrew Yang and Kathryn Garcia campaigned side by side in Manhattan and Queens on Saturday.

Yang told his supporters to rank Garcia on their ballots.

“If you support me, please do have Kathryn Garcia also on your ballot. She’s a tremendous public servant. She’s a good person. She will do everything she can to help us and our families,” Yang said.

Garcia didn’t do the same for Yang. “I am not telling my voters what to do,” she said.

The two made it clear that it was not a co-endorsement but rather a reminder for voters to cast their ballots on Primary Day on Tuesday, or even ahead of it during early voting, which wraps up Sunday.

“I have said that my ballot would be private,” Garcia said. “My ballot is private. And I would encourage my voters to follow their preferences of who they want to have on their ballot. And that is what I did, and I encourage every New Yorker to do that.”

Yang said he had “no issue with Kathryn keeping her preferences on her ballot to herself. I think that’s something that every voter has a right to.”

Garcia, a former city sanitation commissioner, and Yang, an entrepreneur and former presidential candidate, are among the leading candidates heading into Primary Day.
