NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Governors Island will be open year-round starting this fall, with NYC Ferry providing daily service there, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday.

The 172-acre island in New York Harbor, which has historically been open from May to October, will be open from 7 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. all year long starting on Nov. 1, the mayor said at his daily briefing.

“Governors Island—for a long time it wasn’t accessible to New Yorkers, and then since it’s become accessible, it’s not for the whole year, it’s only certain times of year,” the mayor said. “We’re going to change that. Starting this fall, we’re going to be opening up Governors Island year-round.”

“It’s an amazing place,” de Blasio added. “It’s a great place to go and get a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.”

To match the new schedule, the city is expanding NYC Ferry service to reach Governors Island daily, year-round.

The ferry service will begin this year when NYC Ferry's Coney Island Route is inaugurated, de Blasio said. The route will connect communities in Coney Island and Bay Ridge to Wall Street/Pier 11.
