NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to host an in-person fundraising event next week—days before she replaces outgoing Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and as she looks to seek a full term as governor in 2022, according to a report.
The campaign fundraiser, planned in Hochul’s hometown of Buffalo, was originally expected to happen at her property, but had to be moved as interest in her has grown after Cuomo announced earlier this week he’d resign amid a sexual harassment scandal, CNBC reported.
Sources told CNBC that top tickets for the event could sell for between $2,500 and $5,000, with longtime loyalists of the lieutenant governor set to attend.
“These are people that have been with her since the town board. They have been her supporters and friends for a long time,” one source told CNBC.
Hochul holds a fundraiser around her Aug. 27 birthday every year, according to the report, which said the event was planned before Cuomo announced he was stepping down.
The gubernatorial fundraiser would come days before Hochul is due to take over for Cuomo on Aug. 24, though there’s a chance it may be pushed back to give Hochul time to settle into her new role, according to the report.
Hochul said Thursday that she plans to seek a full term as governor in 2022 after finishing Cuomo’s term. “I fully expect to,” she told Savannah Guthrie during an appearance on the “Today” show.
According to CNBC, Hochul’s reelection campaign has about $1.7 million on hand after raising just over $525,000 in the first half of 2021.
A spokesperson for Hochul didn't respond to requests for comment from CNBC.
