A 52-year-old woman called 911 around 2 a.m. to report that she was being menaced by a stranger in a parking lot on Mineola Boulevard in Mineola.

During the encounter, police said the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Peter Belton, who lives about a half-mile from the scene, "stated that he was going to stab the victim and he then lunged in her direction."

Fearing for her safety, the woman backed away and called the cops.

An officer responded and found Belton walking nearby. When the officer asked him to stop, police said Belton became combative and struck the officer in the face with a closed fist.

As the officer tried to place him under arrest, Belton began flailing his arms, causing both men to fall to the ground. That's when additional officers arrived on the scene and helped place Belton into custody.

The woman was not hurt in the incident.

The officer sustained substantial pain, swelling, bruising and lacerations to his face and both hands.

Belton sustained an injury to his elbow.

Both the suspect and officer were taken to the Nassau University Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of their injuries.

Belton, who has no prior arrests, is charged with menacing, assault and resisting arrest.

He will be arraigned when medically practical, police said.
