Marist College extends 'pause' amid COVID-19 outbreak

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Marist College in Poughkeepsie is hitting the pause button as it reports 180 new cases of the coronavirus on its campus.

The school said there are 95 active cases among students living off-campus and 85 among students living on-campus.

Cases are concentrated in two freshman dorms, which are under quarantine.

The college has extended a voluntary pause that was enacted last Wednesday for the remainder of the week.

All classes are being held remotely, meals are grab-and-go, no visitors are allowed, and the recreation center is close.

Sports are on hold, except for women's basketball.

Students can go out for groceries, to see a doctor, or for an off-campus job.

Students can go out for a walk with members of their pod.

Masks and social distancing are a must and testing for the virus continues.

The school will reassess Friday.

Marist College officials are unsure how COVID managed to get a foothold on campus.
