VIDEO: Drunk driver hits mother, infant before crashing into Yonkers barbershop

YONKERS, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Police have arrested the driver of a vehicle that slammed into a mother and her baby before crashing through a storefront in Yonkers Friday morning.

The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Morningside Place.

Authorities say it happened when a drunk driver crashed into a parked vehicle on Lake Avenue, causing the car to spin and crash into a mother, who was crossing the street with her infant daughter in her arms.

Surveillance video from the scene showed the moment the dark-colored sedan collided with the mother, as she attempted to run out of way.

As the vehicle continued on – crashing into John’s Barbershop – the 36-year-old mother and her 8-month-old child were violently pushed from the street into the shop.

Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller notes the baby became pinned under the vehicle and officers “lifted the car” to rescue her. It remains unclear if the mother was also pinned.

While the people inside the barbershop were virtually unharmed, Yonkers officials said the mother and her child suffered “significant injuries.”

“The baby has a fractured skull and mother has compound fractures to her leg,” said Mueller.

Both the mother and child are expected to recover.

Authorities note the driver of the vehicle, who has not yet been identified, is unlicensed.

Yonkers Police say he is facing DWI and aggravated vehicular assault charges in connection to the incident.
