NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Cardinal Timothy Dolan visited Ukraine over the weekend to meet with refugees fleeing the devastation of Russia’s war, now in its third month.

The New York archbishop was in Poland on Monday following an unannounced trip to Lviv in western Ukraine. He has also visited Romania and Slovakia.

Dolan tweeted video of him meeting with refugees and the Catholic relief agencies that have been caring for them along the border of Poland and Ukraine—a region now dotted with soldiers and security checkpoints.

Dolan told WCBS 880 on Monday that he was inspired and uplifted by the care, mercy and charity that have come from all over the world. He praised the strength and resilience of people fleeing the war, many of them children.

“Even though they’re realistic, they were not panicky, and they were not desperate,” he said. “There was kind of a sense of heroic stoicism about it.”

Ukrainians asked Dolan to tell Americans “how grateful we are for their help.”

He said the Ukrainians have been through many hardships before, including throughout the 20th century with the Nazis and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

“They’ve never lost their sense of resilience and hope, so in many ways, they were preaching the sermon to me,” he said.
