TRENTON, N.J. (WCBS 880) — Officials arrested the co-owner of a New Jersey taxi cab service they said attempted to bribe police officers so that they would stop investigating the business, officials said.

Trenton police arrested 53-year-old Maria Puma, on Wednesday.

According to police, Puma learned in May that Violent crime rapid response detectives in Trenton were conducting taxicab inspections over rider complaints.

She allegedly began to reach out to detectives, offering them $200 a week to stop enforcement against Primo Taxi and cite her competitors instead.

Puma then handed an undercover detective the cash bribe during a meeting, officials said.

The cash and the taxi she arrived in were seized by authorities, police added.

She was charged with two counts of bribery, officials said in a statement.
