FAIR LAWN, N.J. (WCBS 880) — Plans are being put in place to preserve the giant red neon letters atop the now-shuttered Nabisco factory in New Jersey.

For more than 60 years, the sweet smell of Oreos, Ritz Crackers and other tasty treats would waft out of the factory on Route 208 in Fair Lawn.

The bakery closed last year and 600 jobs were lost along with it.

Fair Lawn Mayor Kurt Peluso on Wednesday said he has struck a deal with a new developer that when the building comes down next year, the iconic letters will be preserved.

The mayor suspects just seeing those letters will trigger flashbacks of the old factory for many residents.

"It will be really cool to see those big, bright letters again," Peluso said. "The fresh smell of cookies was the best and it seemed to always come with the beginning of spring. There'd be a nice, small gust of wind, something in the warm 60 degrees, and you smelled fresh baked cookies. It was a great thing to smell."

Plans have yet to be finalized, but the letters could end up in parks or in a museum.

"Maybe there's a way we could put a letter at different parks or we could put them all together for people to look at, we could put some into our historical museum," Peluso said. "So there's a number of options that will be looked at and it's going to depend on what kind of material has been used and where would be the best place to preserve them."

The borough will preserve other Nabisco artifacts from the property as well.
