NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The declining severity of New York’s omicron wave continued Friday, with positivity rates not seen since over a month and a half ago.

New York officials reported a 6.15% COVID positivity rate Friday, the lowest since Dec. 15. Daily cases clocked in at about 13,600, the sixth day in a row with cases in the 10,000, way down from the omicron peak of over 90,000.
Hospitalizations for the virus also continued on an encouraging downward trend — now at 8,181, down over 500 from the day before, and 4,000 fewer than the omicron peak.
New York City boasted the state’s lowest infection rate for months before omicron, and then the highest early this year.
But now, New York City’s overall positivity rate has dropped below 6%, the lowest in the state, while Western New York has a rate above 14%.
Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan all boast rates between 5.2 and 5.7%, while Queens is above 7%. Back on Jan. 5, the Bronx had a rate above 27%, while no borough was below 18%.
One concerning figure is the amount of deaths reported Friday due to the virus — 171. The Empire State hasn’t seen less than 100 virus deaths in a single day since Jan. 5.
COVID-19 testing and vaccinations at city-run sites will be suspended Saturday, while appointments being rescheduled for Sunday.
