NYPD: Man barricaded inside Memorial Sloan Kettering in custody after hourslong standoff

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A man, who according to multiple reports was armed and had barricaded himself inside Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center on the Upper East Side, is in police custody.

Just after midnight, the NYPD's 19th Precinct tweeted that the man was taken into custody without incident and no injuries were reported.

Earlier, the precinct tweeted around 10 p.m. Thursday that "there is an active police investigation occurring inside Sloan Kettering Hospital located at 425 E 67 Street" and advised the public to avoid the area.

Citizen App and several news outlets had been reporting the man was armed with a gun.

The New York Post reported the man fired several shots in the emergency room before locking himself in a bathroom.

WNBC-TV was also reporting that shots were fired.

CBS2 reported the man was a patient at the hospital.

Portions of the hospital had reportedly been evacuated and the NYPD's Emergency Services Unit responded to the scene.

It appears no hostages were involved and there were no injuries.

Police told WCBS 880 that the man was arrested around 11:50 p.m. They would not confirm whether the man was armed or if shots were fired during the incident.

67th Street was closed between 1st Avenue and York Avenue for the police investigation.
