NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating after a man made anti-Asian remarks to a woman and struck her in the face at a Manhattan subway station this weekend, police said.
The 37-year-old woman, who is of Asian descent, was at the 51st Street/Lexington Avenue station in midtown around 8:45 p.m. Saturday when she was approached by the man, according to police.
The man struck the woman in the face and made anti-Asian statements to her near the downtown 6-line platform, police said.
The woman was not seriously injured and refused medical attention at the scene.
According to the New York Post, the man said ethnic slurs and told the woman, “You should go back to your country. This is all because of you.”
The NYPD said Sunday that its Hate Crime Task Force was investigating. Police also released images of the man they're searching for.
The incident came the same day that another man was arrested on hate crime charges for allegedly harassing and menacing an Asian woman on a midtown street.
Police said last week that they have investigated more than two dozen anti-Asian bias incidents in the city so far this year, including 12 assaults. Three of the assaults were last weekend.
