NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — For the first time in its history, The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree will come from Maryland, officials announced Thursday morning.

The 79-foot-tall Norway Spruce was donated by an Elkton, Maryland, family and will be cut on Nov. 11 and arrive in Rockefeller Center on Nov. 13.
After arriving, the 85-year-old tree will be covered in 50,000 multi-colored LED lights on approximately 5 miles of wire and topped off with a 900 pound three-dimensional Swarovski star.
The annual tree-lighting ceremony, first organized in 1933 two years after it was first erected in, will be broadcast live on NBC on Dec. 1.
Once the holiday season ends, the historic tree will go on to help a family in need of a home.
Habitat for Humanity will use the lumber milled to build a home — a practice the nonprofit has done since 2007.
