The alleged incident took place outside of the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport Sunday, where performances of “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” are taking place through the end of the month.

Northport police said the cast member reported to theater staff that they faced racist comments.

Police reached out to the Suffolk County theater after being notified of the incident, but learned that the cast member didn’t want to file a police report.

Sunday’s performance was canceled in light of the incident.

“Words cannot express the deep sadness and disappointment we felt in learning of a racist incident outside our own theater today. We are disgusted that this happened and stand in strong support of all our cast, crew and staff,” theater officials posted on Instagram.

More details about what exactly was said were not immediately known.

The theater only just reopened for business last month after a lengthy pandemic pause.

“The John W. Engeman Theater has a no tolerance police toward racism, racist comments and offensive remarks. Our theater should be seen as a place of acceptance and safety for staff, patrons and all community members,” the statement continued.

Northport police said it would conduct its own investigation into the incident, and asked anyone with information to contact them at 631-261-7500.
