NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Greenwich Village residents packed an emergency meeting held by the NYPD to call for more security at Washington Square Park.
Residents told police they are sick and tired of the drugs, noise, crime, vandalism and trash that has been plaguing the park overnight.
"People are urinating and defecating on our stoop," one resident said at the meeting.
WCBS 880's Sean Adams on Thursday morning also spoke with several residents who are fed up with the late night parties and chaos.
"I'd say in the last three months it's really gone into the toilet," said one man, who'd like to see more police and trash cans in the area.
"I don't know what they're doing to be honest, but from what I heard there is a police presence," one woman said. "The noise doesn't stop at night, the trash is unbelievable. I don't know how the park staff manages."
"Basically there seems to be no law and order," another resident said. "I would like to see just more policing in the park. I think that at least has to be the start."
Police promise they will protect residents and address concerns.
The city tried to enforce a 10 p.m. curfew on weekends, but gave up after parkgoers clashed with police.
