NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Rikers Island inmate was indicted on Tuesday for attempted murder after stabbing another detainee, causing a life-threatening injury that required open-heart surgery, according to prosecutors.
The stabbing happened on Dec. 20, 2023, at the George R. Vierno Center where Shane Delisle, 25, allegedly a member of the Gorilla Stone Bloods, is accused of stabbing fellow inmate Charles Satterwhite, 32, who is also believed to be associated with the same gang, according to prosecutors.
According to an investigation, Delisle allegedly stabbed Satterwhite in the back and chest with a 7-inch plexiglass knife.
Officers detained Delisle after using pepper spray, according to court documents. They later allegedly recovered two plexiglass knives from the cell Delisle stayed in.
Satterwhite was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he underwent open heart surgery.
The suspect and victim are believed to have known each other before the stabbing, according to Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark.
“This vicious attack was caught on video, which showed the defendant allegedly stabbing the victim multiple times with a piece of plexiglass fashioned into a knife, causing life-threatening injuries,” Clark said. “Department of Correction Officers swiftly stopped him before the victim was killed.”
He was initially arrested for attempted murder and conspiracy in Queens and has been in jail since March 7, 2023, according to records.
Delisle was arraigned on attempted murder, two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of first-degree promoting prison contraband, third-degree assault, two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and two counts of second-degree promoting prison contraband.
He was remanded and is due back in court on May 14.
