NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An armed robber who stuck up employees at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens for $280,000 in March 2020 was sentenced to nine years in prison, the Department of Justice announced Thursday.

To pull off the robbery, Lamel Miller, 41, worked with his childhood friend, Lafayette Morrison, a 41-year-old security guard at the track who acted as an “inside man.”

On March 7 around 10 p.m., Morrison tipped off Miller when employees went to move money from the Gotham Day stakes races that took place the day before.

Miller held the employees at gunpoint, including Morrison who feigned surprise, and stole about $280,000.

Morrison was convicted of robbery and related charges, whereas Miller pleaded guilty in September 2022.

Morrison was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison last month, compared to Miller’s nine-year sentence.

“These sentences are the finale to the armed robbery that played out like a Hollywood movie heist,” said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace. “Miller and Morrison made the wrong bet in robbing the Aqueduct Racetrack and have been justly punished for their violent crimes.”
