NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A man was arrested and charged with murder on Saturday after allegedly shooting his mother in the head and killing her inside of the Queens home they shared on Friday night, police said.
Dashawn Coggins, 36, was cuffed at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection to the shooting that occurred in his Jamaica home the night before.
Police responded to 160-64 121st Ave. at about 9:24 p.m., officials said, and found 61-year-old Natalie Coggins with a gunshot wound to the head.
She was unconscious and unresponsive, and EMS pronounced her dead at the scene, authorities said.
Law enforcement confirmed that the suspect and defendant were mother and son and shared the same address.
The victim’s neighbor told 1010 WINS/WCBS 880 that Dashawn had been living with his mother for only a few months.
Kim Smith, who has lived in the neighborhood all her life, said that she heard the screams of Natalie’s daughter on Friday night after finding her mother’s body.
“She just was yelling, all I could hear was her saying ‘My mama, my mother, help,’” Smith said.
Smith said that there was a heavy police presence in the neighborhood on Friday night into Saturday morning due to the investigation.
