NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A statue of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be unveiled in Brooklyn next year.
The bronze statue will be placed a City Point development, in downtown Brooklyn, and will be revealed on March 15 – which would have been Ginsburg’s 88th birthday.
According to a press release, Borough President Eric Adams will also declare the day to be Justice Ginsburg Day in Brooklyn.
“No one can dispute the towering achievements of this judicial giant and the value of adding her likeness to the landscape of our city,” Adams said in a statement.
Artist duo Gillie and Marc will design the statue as part of their "Statues for Equality" series. The two are also responsible for designing and installing 10 other sculptures of women around the city.
“We had the honor and privilege to create Justice Ginsburg’s likeness in everlasting bronze as a part of Statues for Equality. The final statue, which she endorsed, reflects her wish to be depicted in a dignified manner,” the duo said. “With the two steps on its large base representing the Supreme Court and the climb she made to get there, the work is designed to provide the public with an opportunity to stand at her side, and gain inspiration from her journey fighting for equal rights.”
Chris Conlon, EVP and Chief Operating Officer of Acadia Realty, partner in the City Point development, says he hopes the statue will serve as “a small reminder that we all need to set the highest possible standards for ourselves and society.”
