HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Some Long Island churches are teaming up to collect supplies to send to the people of Ukraine.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone on Tuesday announced the county is partnering with Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in West Islip, Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lindenhurst and St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Riverhead to collect donations that will be sent to Ukraine to help citizens impacted by the ongoing conflict.

"We're looking for things like first aid kits, Band-Aids, gauze, Advil, Tylenol, toothbrushes, toothpaste, baby diapers," Bellone said.

V. Reverend Victor Wronskyj of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA said growing up in Huntington, his parents always spoke about fleeing the Ukraine.

"And they fled Ukraine the same way Ukrainians are fleeing right now. My mom tells me how she fled Ukraine with the bombs falling, soldiers shooting bullets at them," said Wronskyj, who can't believe that again people are fleeing the country because of war.

Reverend Nicholas Popovici, of Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, said they have already sent a box of supplies to Ukraine and he invites anyone who can to come by and donate whatever they can.

"The side door of the church is open, everyone is welcome to bring the stuff and every evening we're packaging and sending to Ukraine," he said. "Our church is open for everyone."
