Sports gambling is a popular trend, and during Super Bowl season, the stakes are high.
What could this common form of gambling do to our mental health and our social lives? What happens when it leads down a path of addiction?
Just last week, a furniture store salesman bet over $4 million on the Super Bowl, just as the industry is seeing a 35% increase in plans to bet on the game compared to last year.
For Dr. Timothy Fong, the co-director of the UCLA Gambling Studies program, there is a fine line between addiction and casual gambling.
“We also know addictive disorders happen when you have more opportunities, more availability, more affordability, more access, there's going to be problems, particularly in communities that are vulnerable to that addiction,” Fong told “Connect the Dots”.
On the latest episode of the “Connect the Dots” podcast, we hear from Dr. Fong, as well as sports radio pioneer (and former gambling addict) Craig Carton and law professor Marc Edelman to learn about the ins and outs of sports gambling and the work that’s being done to humanize those struggling with a gambling addiction.
