NEW YORK (WCBS 880) Officials launched an investigation after an off-duty NYPD cop was robbed at knifepoint and carjacked while attempting to stop two suspects from breaking into a different vehicle in Manhattan earlier this week, according to police.

The incident occurred on East 35th Street near First Avenue in Murray Hill at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday as the unidentified 39-year-old officer was sitting in his car, according to the NYPD.

Authorities said the officer confronted a suspect he spotted entering a white Chevy Suburban and trying to steal a battery charger pack.

The suspect then brandished a machete, while a second suspect who was with him flashed a handgun, police said.

One of the suspects ordered the officer to get down on the ground and then began punching him in the head.

The suspect took the officer's wallet, cellphone, and car key, officials said.

The suspects then drove off in the officer’s red Toyota RAV4, police said.

No injuries were reported and the officer refused medical attention.

An investigation is ongoing.
