19-year-old arrested after bat beaten to death in Snapchat video

BREWSTER, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Authorities have made an arrest after disturbing video posted to Snapshot showed a man using a rock to beat a bat to death in a Putnam Valley cave.

The Putnam County SPCA said they were contacted about the social media clip by the state Department of Environmental Conservation Police in April.

It showed the suspect killing the bat as it was resting against a rock wall in the Sunken Mines Caves.

"The suspect took a large rock, with no justifiable reason, appeared to crush the bat multiple times causing it extreme pain and ultimately its death – all while yelling expletives about coronavirus and laughing," the SPCA said.

Authorities managed to track down the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Caleb Shuk of Philipstown, and have charged him with one count of animal cruelty.

He is set to be arraigned in Putnam Valley Justice Court on May 13.
