HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A Long Island man is facing a charge of driving while intoxicated following a crash that left a tow truck driver critically injured.
Joseph Savasta, 57, of Oyster Bay, was behind the wheel of a 2019 Mercedes-Benz heading westbound on the Long Island Expressway in Hauppauge when the vehicle crashed into a flatbed tow truck around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
The Mercedes-Benz overturned before coming to a rest next to a median while the tow truck veered off the road into a wooded area.
The tow truck driver, identified by police as 37-year-old Christopher Francis of Medford, was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.
Savasta was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.
He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
