The spread of the contagious delta variant of the coronavirus is prompting several tech companies to mandate returning employees be vaccinated for COVID-19 – and now, at least one is closing its major offices.
Twitter announced to employees it will close its offices in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood and San Francisco "until further notice," a spokesman confirmed to KCBS Radio via email on Wednesday afternoon. The office closure allows the company "to closely monitor local conditions and make necessary changes that prioritize the health and safety of our Tweeps."
Much of Twitter’s workforce will be permanently allowed to work remotely, a move the company announced even as the pandemic raged.
The social media company just reopened its offices two weeks ago.
The news comes on the same day Google pushed back its return-to-work plan until at least Oct. 18 due to the spike in cases locally and nationwide. Facebook, which joined Google in announcing vaccination requirements for returning employees on Wednesday, began reopening its offices in May.
