NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A water main break is causing problems for the subways in Upper Manhattan.
It happened around 5:30 a.m. at 103rd Street and Broadway, disrupting service on the 1, 2 and 3 lines about 90 minutes after aboveground subway service had resumed following a suspension Monday afternoon due to the snowstorm.
The MTA said 2 trains were running on the 5 line between 149th Street-Grand Concourse and Nevins Street; 1 train service was suspended between 137th Street-City College and Times Square-42nd Street.
Some northbound 2 trains were running from Brooklyn to Manhattan with the last stop being Times Square-42nd Street.
There was no 3 train service in Manhattan at this time.
As an alternative, customers were urged to take the A, C, D, N, Q, or R trains.
The M104 bus was also an option for service between Times Square-42nd Street and 137th Street-City College. Customers can transfer to the M7 bus from the M104 bus for service between 96th Street and 149th Street-Grand Concourse.
WCBS 880's Marla Diamond said there was some good news as a river of water washed away some of the snow that was dumped on the city Monday, but crews then had to work to give that water somewhere to go.
Commuters had to climb mounds of snow at the curb cuts to cross streets which were plowed.
Maureen Cavanaugh, who was waiting in the middle of the street for an Uber after subway service was disrupted, said she thought she pulled a hamstring while navigating the snow.
"I actually fell. I was walking through and it was like walking through very deep mashed potatoes," she said.
Water service has been shut off to customers in the area of 103rd Street between Broadway and West End.
"It's a big thing and we could hear the water in our building. Like we reached the first floor, we could hear the water flowing," said resident Kamal Rothi, who's apartment building lost water.
