NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A three-month-old girl was killed and her parents were injured when they were struck by a wrong-way driver in Brooklyn Saturday evening, police said.
The driver of a Honda Civic was traveling in the wrong direction on Gates Avenue, in Clinton Hill, when they struck another car and the family around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of Vanderbilt Avenue in Clinton Hill, police said.
Video from the scene shows the driver's car totaled, crashed into another sedan — both wedged up onto the sidewalk.
The driver of the car and one other passenger then fled the scene on foot, police said.
The infant was transported to the Brooklyn Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead. Her 33-year-old mother was taken to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in serious condition. Her 36-year-old father was also transported to Brooklyn Hospital Center in stable condition, police said.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in a crash, a 49-year-old woman, was transported to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in stable condition.
Cops tracked down the passenger of the vehicle, who was arrested but not charged, police said.
Police later announced they had taken Tyrik Mott, the 28-year-old driver allegedly responsible for the crash, into custody.
Traffic violence is surging across the city, with traffic 176 deaths recorded through Sept. 5 — a 23.9% increase from that time last year when 142 deaths were recorded, according to NYPD data. The deaths represent a steady uptick under Vision Zero in recent years, from 205 fatalities recorded in 2018 to 244 deaths recorded last year.
