Man killed, 6 injured in multi-car, chain-reaction crash on Long Island

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A man was killed and six people were injured in a multi-car, chain-reaction crash on Long Island on Christmas, Nassau County Police said Monday.

The 61-year-old man was driving a Volkswagen westbound on Greenwich Street in Hempstead just after 6 p.m. when he collided near Henry Street with an Acura MDX traveling in the same direction.

The Acura then crashed into a Ford Explorer whose driver was stopped and waiting to turn onto Henry Street from Greenwich Street.

The Volkswagen struck a BMW that was traveling southbound on Henry Street.

The driver of the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Edgar Romero, of Freeport.

Two teens in the car with Romero—a 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy—suffered minor injuries.

A 37-year-old man driving the Acura suffered serious injuries, while his passengers—a 37-year-old woman and two girls, ages 14 and 4—suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Ford was not injured.

The driver of the BMW suffered trauma to both his arm and body.

The injured were transported to area hospitals for treatment or evaluation.

The vehicles were towed from the scene.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
