NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- As pandemic restrictions lift, masks come off and lives start moving again, families with children under five feel that they’re being left behind.

Children under five still aren’t eligible to be vaccinated, and parents feel pressure to stay isolated to keep their children safe.

Physician Fatima Khan has a vaccinated six-year-old and an unvaccinated two-year-old.

She started a Facebook group and Twitter page called Protect Their Future, which both advocate for FDA approval of vaccines for kids five-and-under.

“It’s very difficult to hear people say ‘oh the pandemic is over,’ when a lot of families today, especially those with children under five, are living in a similar world that they were living in in March 2020,” said Khan.

Pediatric COVID-19 cases jumped 43% over the most recent two week period. Hospitalizations are also up for young children.

Kids four-and-under are five times more likely to get infected than those five-to-17.

“I am concerned both as a physician and as a parent that we are failing our children,” said Khan. “That we are sending them into contact with a novel virus completely without protection. Our kids are sitting ducks right now.”
