Top Democrats, Republicans support more research into UFOs

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Democrats and Republicans are at odds on most topic these days but, one thing they seem to be in agreement on is supporting further research on UFOs.

On Tuesday, WCBS 880’s Steve Scott spoke with Washington Post White House bureau chef Ashley Parker, who said that the American public is about to learn much more about Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) – also known as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UPAs).

“We are about to learn more about what the government knows about UFOs, which is basically because the Biden administration…is set to release the report of everything that the government knows about UFOs that they can declassify in June,” she said. “I’ve been talking to UFO experts [and] they think that no matter how explosive the information is, the government will try to play it down in a very sort of government-y, bureaucratic report. But this will be a glimpse that we haven't had in the past.”

The effort has bipartisan support with several Republicans, including one-time presidential hopeful Sen. Marco Rubio, and top Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, voicing support for the publication of the report.

Parker believes this is mainly because the stigma behind UFO believers has waned in the last few years as more and more Americans continue to say the believe in extraterrestrial life.

“In years prior, belief in you opposed was sort of the purview of the wacky, the kind of zany conspiracy theories – and again, not everyone is saying that they believe that, for instance, UFOs are piloted by extraterrestrial life. But, you do have Barack Obama, Marco Rubio, Hillary Clinton, Harry Reid, Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump even a little bit, sort of saying, ‘There’s something there that is worth studying and getting to the bottom of,’” Parker said.

The Washington Post reporter stresses that people should not prepare for the confirmation of alien life, as UFOs can be a variety of things – which is why the government is strongly supporting further research.

“It could be technology from Russia, or China, or a geopolitical rival that is so far advanced from what we have that it's something we need to learn about and study and catch up on,” Parker said. “It doesn't mean anything about alien life, although there's certainly some people who are open to that possibility, as well.”

In her report, Parker notes that the effort to better understand UFOs began in 2007, with Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, who sought to create a secret research program called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program. That program briefly existed to study encounters between UFOs and the nation’s military but no longer exists.

A new government program, known as the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force, has since taken up research efforts, Parker reports.
