HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A 71-year-old man from Bergen County was charged with killing his wife, then attempting to cover it up as a robbery before calling 911 to his house, prosecutors announced on Sunday night.

According to police, Michael Manis called emergency responders Saturday afternoon, alleging that after arriving at his home on Hamilton Ave in Hasbrouck Heights, he found his wife dead.

But an investigation into the incident alleges that Manis had actually murdered his wife on Friday, then faked a crime scene for police to discover the following day, at approximately 5 p.m.

The prosecutors' office has not yet identified Manis' wife.

Michael, a retiree who purportedly owned his own lighting company, stares down counts including first-degree murder, the desecration of human remains, hindering apprehension, and making a false report to law enforcement, authorities said.
