The event will take place in Verona Park and aim to raise funds to support children with cancer medically and socially.
Since 1976, the Valerie Fund has helped provide comfort and healing for New Jersey children with cancer and blood disorders.
WCBS 880’s John Metaxas interviewed cancer survivors who were helped by the fund.
Alison Craven said the fund has been a crucial ally for her family as they deal with the day-to-day realities of her two-year-old daughter Charlotte’s cancer diagnosis.
“The Valerie Fund is doing a great job at getting the word out there, and it’s very special what they’re doing — to be able to provide for families and make them feel not alone,” she said. “It’s been very very crucial to help us progress in this journey and not struggle as much as we could be struggling.”
Abigael Saint-Pierre was a junior at Hillside Highschool when she got her diagnosis. She said the disease was isolating, but that the Valerie Fund supported her through her experience.
“You’re never alone, and there’s always going to be someone here when you do feel alone,” she said.
Now she’s on track to go to Seton Hall University after High School, where she hopes to become a doctor or nurse to help children with serious illnesses.
Annie Martel said the fund continued to support her after her recovery.
“While I was pregnant they held my hand through everything,” she said. “Since I had my cancer history, they also wanted me to be treated as a high risk pregnancy. So they made it as not scary as possible.”
