Court Rules Lake Calhoun Name Change was Illegal

A state appeals court says 'not so fast' following the successful effort to rename Minneapolis' Lake Calhoun.

It was renamed Bde Maka Ska in January of 2018--it's original Dakota name, after activists pushed to have it changed because John C. Calhoun was a supporter of slavery. The federal government even approved it, and all signage around the lake was changed.

Now, the Minnesota Court of Appeals has ruled that former DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr's changing of the name was illegal and he had no authority to do so.

The unanimous opinion by a three-judge panel says the name will go back to Calhoun, and the only body that has the authority to change it is the Legislature.
