The second time was the charm for Minneapolis' new fire chief.
Mayor Jacob Frey's nominee, Dr. Reginald Freeman, applied for the job five years ago but was passed over for recently retired chief Brian Tyner.
Frey says the fact that Freeman kept trying for the job speaks to his character.
"Someone who steps up, fails to get the nomination, and steps up again, signals someone that has commitment to this city and really wants to be here," Frey explains.
Some council members expressed reservations over Freeman's previous experience and leadership abilities, and a 2022 harassment lawsuit during his previous tenure as Hartford, Connecticut fire chief.
In a statement, Freeman says he will lead by example, support the community, and ensure that each of the city's firehouses plays an active role in the fabric of the neighborhoods they serve.
“I want to thank Mayor Frey, the City Council, and the residents of this great City for entrusting me to lead the Minneapolis Fire Department into its next chapter. I do not take this responsibility lightly,” said Chief Freeman.
Councilmember LaTrisha Vetaw also shared a message to Freeman, who was not in attendance for the vote.
"I will be paying close attention to how you lead, how you treat the men and women of this department, and rather you follow through on the commitments you have made," Vetaw said. "I hope you earn the trust of this council, and the firefighters you lead, and the people of Minneapolis."
