The Twins went with speed and power on the first day of baseball's amateur draft, taking infielder Keoni Cavaco in the first round.
The 13th overall selection, Cavaco first impressed the Twins a year ago when he showed off his power at the plate, skill at third base and shortstop, and speed on the basepaths.
"They've been following me since last fall," said Cavaco. "When the time came, I had a really good feeling about it."
Cavaco stands to make about $4 million if he signs with the Twins, which he expects to do.
"I'm just excited to start playing pro ball," he said.
The Twins also selected outfielder Matt Wallner of Forest Lake as the 39th overall pick. A former pitcher who was a late-round pick by the Twins out of high school, Wallner is the all-time home run leader at Southern Mississippi.
In the second round, the Twins picked righthanded pitcher Matt Canterino, who was a standout at NCAA powerhouse Rice.
The Twins also got better on the field immediately on Monday, reinstating Nelson Cruz from the injured list in time for their three-game series at Cleveland.
Cruz had been on the injured list with a left wrist strain on May 17, and recently played a two-game rehab assignment with the Class Single-A Ft. Myers Miracle.
The designated hitter who was signed in the off-season had two hits in seven at-bats for Ft. Myers over the weekend.
Prior to getting hurt, Cruz was hitting .270 with nine doubles, seven home runs, and 22 RBI.
To make room on the roster, the Twins optioned rookie infielder Luis Arraez to Class Triple-A Rochester.
Arraez appeared in ten games for the Twins, with his first major league home run coming among his nine hits in 24 at-bats.
