Governor Walz is resting comfortably after undergoing surgery Thusrday to repair a torn meniscus.

Walz temporarly transferred his duty as Minnesota's chief executive to Lieutenant Govenor Peggy Flanagan during the surgery, and now he's back in charge of the state's affairs.

The operation took place at TRIA Orthopedic Center in Bloomington. The surgery was announced earlier this week.

Dr. Marc Tompkins at TRIA says the procedure is common.

"It's a super common problem and actually still the most orthopedic surgery," Dr. Tompkins said. "Any surgery carries risk, but this surgery carries all the standard risks and nothing more."

Under Minnesota law, Gov. Walz informed the Speaker of the House and President of the Senate that he will be under general anesthetic during the surgery.

"After years of running, this minor surgery will help ensure I can hit the pavement again soon," Gov. Walz said before the surgery happened.

Last year, then-Governor Mark Dayton underwent back surgery, which led to questions about who was in charge of the state at the time.
